Languages

In NSW primary schools, the study of a language is optional.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

Japanese

Konnichiwa and welcome to Japanese at Sutton Public School!

My name is Laura Wilson and I am thrilled to be Sutton Public School's new Japanese teacher. I began learning Japanese when I was in primary school and had the opportunity to live and study in Japan as an exchange student when I was in high school. I have travelled to Japan many times since then, and I look forward to sharing the Japanese language and cultural insights with the students at Sutton Public School.

This term students are learning greetings and self-introductions in Japanese. They will learn which greetings to use at different times of day and how to say their name and age in Japanese. The senior students will also learn how to say their year level at school.

We will be learning through games, songs and hands-on activities that I hope will engage students and get them learning while having fun with the language. When planning my units, I will be working from the new Japanese curriculum. Through the Communicating strand, I will offer students opportunities to interact with each other and respond to language. They will also create their own texts, both spoken and written. Through the Understanding strand we will explore the Japanese language, its sounds and structure, and make connections between language and culture.

I look forward to a very rewarding year at Sutton Public School. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me through the front office or by email at laura.wilson63@det.nsw.edu.au.

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
